Start with the amp
Turn down preamp and power amp drive for a cleaner tone. Raise preamp drive to bring in crunch. The tight control changes the feel of the tube response, while the number of gain stages changes the available distortion.
Power amp drive can add saturation and compression. Push it harder for a more extreme response. Adjust output level when comparing settings.
Shape the tone
The tone-stack mode blends between different circuit responses. Explore its range while playing the same phrase, then adjust the individual tone controls to fit the part.
Add pedals
Use the pedal section to introduce drive, distortion or fuzz before the amp. Try one at a time first, then listen to what happens when they are stacked.
Give the cabinet its voice
The cabinet section has left and right controls, speaker choices and a speaker-cone model. Different left and right settings can add width. Use stereo width to bring the two channels together or spread them apart.
Explore stereo editing
In stereo edit mode, a control change increases its value in one channel and decreases it in the other. Use it deliberately, then check the result in mono as well as stereo.
